reclaimed douglas fir and redwood planks from los angeles residential demolitions are the heart and soul of the sadie series. EACH INDIVIDUAL BOARD BARES THE SCARS from a life once lived: nail holes, dents, cracks, checks. each board i select needs to be completely renewed, and goes through a meticulous process of making it furniture grade.
using a blowtorch, the wood is carefully burned under intense heat. THE BURNING OF THE wood '‘lifts” THE GRAIN, giving the wood its distinct textured feel. the heat CREATES THE STUNNING DISCOLORATION; hues of BROWN, RED AND AMBER naturally develop within the wood itself during this process.
skillful finishing is vital in allowing this piece to “breathe.” every board is PAINSTAKINGLY sanded until the feel and coloration is right. every board is then METICULOUSLY FINISHED by hand, rubbing-in a combination of oils and waxes, providing an intense glow and beautifully supple touch.
the design intent of the sadie series was to create sculptural furniture piece that reflects the strength, courage and beauty in all of us. to provide a conversational piece that causes us to stop, to be patient, and to review all perspectives before making a judgement.
